Applicant must demonstrate and exhibit EXCELLENCE in either the areas of FOREIGN LANGUAGES, LANGUAGE ARTS, PERFORMING ARTS or VISUAL ARTS.
Those demonstrating and exhibiting excellence in the area of Foreign Languages must demonstrate proficiency in second-language skills through listening, speaking, reading, writing, and understanding sentence-length speech, and handling a limited number of spoken communicative tasks and situations. Applicant must also have knowledge of another culture in terms of contemporary life, the arts, geography, history, and literature. Applicants must also exhibit leadership in advancing multicultural awareness and an expressed commitment to promote global understanding through continued study of foreign languages and cultures.
Those demonstrating and exhibiting excellence in the area of Language Arts must demonstrate outstanding achievement or potential in the communication areas through the exhibition of written work, oral/audio/video presentations, debate, and portfolios of writing, reading, or viewing which may incorporate the use of current technological tools.
Those demonstrating and exhibiting excellence in Performing Arts must excel in any of the following disciplines:
1) Theatre: Expression of individual acting concepts and skills through improvisation, characterization in classical and contemporary production styles. Applicant must demonstrate participation in the technical/crew area of school or community performances or performance of a role in a school or community production;
2) Instrumental: Demonstration of a developed ability to play with confidence, good posture, excellent tone quality, and proper technique and intonation in both solo and ensemble settings. Applicant must also demonstrate composition ability and knowledge of the musical and cultural characteristics of the major style periods of music;
3) Dance: Demonstration of a developed ability to dance with confidence, grace, good position, technique and rhythm. Applicant must also demonstrate the ability to choreograph simple pieces and the knowledge of the musical and cultural characteristics of the major style periods of dance;
4) Vocal: Demonstration of a developed ability to sing with excellent pitch, technique and intonation, and with the correct notes and rhythms appropriate to the musical score. Applicant must also demonstrate the ability to vocalize simple pieces of varying styles.
Those demonstrating and exhibiting excellence in Visual Arts must demonstrate the knowledge of the elements and principals of design. Applicant must also demonstrate confident expression of individual ideas, feelings and observations through creative works of art and an understanding and appreciation for the role of art history and artists in past and present cultures. |
